Children Orthodontics at Miami Dental Group

The best age to have your child’s first orthodontic consultation is by age 7. Catching development of your child’s teeth early is key in correcting their teeth’s position and development. The first permanent molars and incisors usually come in by that time.  Crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated during your initial consultation. During your consultation, a Miami Dental Group dental professional will guide you with proper growth of the jaw and the development of incoming permanent teeth.  Early treatment can also control the width of the upper and lower dental arches and gain space for permanent teeth to avoid the need for tooth extractions. Moreover, treatment will also correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. For aesthetic options, our office offers traditional and clear/ ceramic brackets to meet your needs.

Phase 1 Children’s Orthodontics

Orthodontic problems can become evident in a child’s smile from a young age. Providing treatment when they have all or most of their adult teeth, we can help avoid severe problems in the future. This process is known as Phase-1 orthodontics. The treatment will be tailored specifically to your child’s developmental needs. We may use either removable oral appliances or recommend at-home interventions for issues like thumb sucking.

Phase 2 Children’s Orthodontics

At second phase orthodontic care, the goal is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth/ jaw.  When this is achieved, your teeth will function together properly. Phase two usually involves treatment of upper and lower braces.

At the beginning of phase 1, we diagnosed and plan for phase-2 treatment plan. Certain types of orthodontic appliances are used in phase one to correct and realign the teeth and jaw.  Second phase begins when all permanent teeth have erupted, and usually requires braces on all the teeth for an average of 18-24 months. Retainers are worn after treatment in order to ensure your child preserves his or her beautiful smile.
